Personally Opposed, But

  /   Saturday, December 06, 2003   /   Comments(0)

I find few things more disgusting than the “Personally Opposed . . . ” argument. Interestingly enough, I found out that it was Cardinal Cushing of Boston who once used that argument. Perhaps he was working under the assumption that not all sins should be made crimes. Whatever his motivation, in hindsight it is an obvious mistake.

A Hole in the Seamless Garment

  /   Friday, December 05, 2003   /   Comments(0)

Judie Brown of the American Life League has this response to the “Seamless Garment” approach to life issues. How someone can reasonably argue that the right to affordable housing is just as important as the right to live is beyond me. I mean, affordable housing is very vital, but how can we talk about housing as a right when we’ve decided that a certain kind of people don’t even have the right to live.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not against people having affordable housing, nor am I against ending world hunger. What I am against is the use of the “seamless garment” approach as an excuse not to speak out against politicians who are supporting a grave evil and then claiming to be Catholic. While being pro-life will not in and itself assure salvation, knowingly and willingly not being pro-life will likely ensure damnation. On top of that, it ensures that ever Communion received is a sacriliege. Who is to say that the bishop who neither says or does anything about it won’t also be held accountable before Almighty God?

Open Sesame, NOT!!

  /   Wednesday, December 03, 2003   /   Comments(0)

It’s time to rant . . . .

How many things have you bought in the last few months or so have packaging that is very difficult to open? It seems that a large percentage of what I buy is nearly impossible to open. Why is everything going this way?

CDs and DVDs are offenders. Not only do you have to take off the celophane wrap, but you have to get that sticker off the top that gives the title and artist. If you don’t, the case won’t open. I have a lot of CDs with broken cases. I wonder how many of these I broke. DVDs are more fun because there are usually three of those stickers on them. I once ripped the entire outer label off a case trying to open it.

Have you ever bought any Monster cables? I have enough to hang several people with. The plastic packaging is awful. I can’t even find a good way to cut it open. A lot of electronics are packaged in this. It’s a wonder that I haven’t broken something very expensive.

Even my cereal boxes are a pain in the keester. I open the inner lining only to find out that it ended up in some contorted configuration that I am unable to pour the cereal from. If I open it wider, I risk making the cereal go stale faster.

Who makes all this packaging? One would think that they don’t use the products they package. After all, they probably can’t open them.

Cowardice

  /   Wednesday, December 03, 2003   /   Comments(0)

Sometimes, we need a little hard hitting truth. Steve Kellmeyer reminds us that a lot of times, the reason we don’t speak up on the truth is because we are cowards. He gives two examples of things that he saw but didn’t comment on. I can give a few examples as well for myself.

Yet, it is strange how I have felt at those times. I haven’t been able to come up with words. Maybe it is because I don’t want to. I don’t know. I do know that we really do need to learn to speak the truth with love and have the courage to do it.

Cross International Catholic Outreach

  /   Monday, December 01, 2003   /   Comments(0)

Is anyone familiar with Cross International Catholic Outreach? Are they a reputable Catholic organization? I have their literature because one of their priests came to my parish on the Solemnity of Christ the King. He was not liturgically sound, to say the least. However, he may not be involved to the point that I should be concerned. Please reply in either my comment box or e-mail link below if you have any information.
