Tridentine Again

  /   Monday December 30, 2002

If you haven’t seen the blog And Then? by Michelle (don’t know her last name), then it’s well worth a look. It will probably be the next link I add to my template.

Here is a post on the Tridentine Mass. It’s in response to a guy who subtly suggests that it may be a sin to attend a Novus Ordo. Even if one could convice me that the Tridentine Mass was in all aspects superior to the Novus Ordo, I would think that the guilt of offering a bad liturgy lies with the priest who offered it, not with the congregation.

The Novus Ordo ain’t perfect, but neither is the Tridentine Mass. I, for one, hope for an improved version of the Novus Ordo rite will be written. Like Michelle, I like kneeling to receive the Eucharist. I also liked the silent Eucharistic prayer. I prefer having the priest face the same direction as the people during the Liturgy of the Eucharist (those words are not addressed to the people; they are addressed to God). However, I am very, very distractable, and it is hard for me to worship at a Mass that I cannot follow. Given that I converted as a teenager, I don’t think there is any way I’d be Catholic if the Mass were still in Latin.

Be sure to catch the end of Michelle’s post. She has a good point.
