Symbol of Religious Freedom

  /   Thursday, January 15, 2004   /   Comments(0)

I’m always amazed at what symbolism people come up with. How about this:

Plain glass is a symbol of religious freedom.

Jeff Miller’s commentary is hilarious.

Plight of a Pharmacist

  /   Wednesday, January 14, 2004   /   Comments(0)

Now, it’s time to shamelessly steal a link from Goodform. I do this because this one could affect me one day. It seems a pharmacist is scheduled for a “hearing” because he refused to dispense a contraceptive. I am assuming he is going before his state board, but the post is not that clear.

Even without the moral issue, the case is still disturbing. There are a lot of other reasons why a pharmacist shouldn’t fill a prescription. For example, sometimes we note a dangerous drug interaction. We call the doctor. The doctor may explain his reasoning, and then we document and fill the prescription. Those are usually good doctors. Others just say “Do what I say, pill pusher!!” That’s usually a sign that the pharmacist should not fill the prescription. Contrary to what some doctors believe, we can be held just a liable, if not more, for filling the prescription. A ruling that says that a pharmacist doesn’t have the right to refuse to fill a prescription would be a great blow to patient safety.

Let’s also not forget that double-standard that says that patients should get whatever they want but health care providers have no freedom of conscience. Please pray for this pharmacist.

Fr. Benedict Groeschel

  /   Monday, January 12, 2004   /   Comments(0)

I am probably the last person to post this, but Fr. Benedict Groeschel was seriously injured after being hit by a car last night in Orlando. He is in intensive care in critical but stable condition. Details can be found at the web site of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. Please pray for his recovery.

From what I have read, he has suffered broken legs, broken arms, and several broken ribs. He is believed to have also had a heart attack and an intracranial bleed. Some of the news articles that I have read suggest that his prospects for survival are not good. Catholic World News has suggested that we pray for the intercession of Venerable Terence Cardinal Cooke as Fr. Groeschel has been active in his cause for canonization.

It’s ‘Cause He’s Polish

  /   Sunday, January 11, 2004   /   Comments(0)

This guy is wrong in so many ways that it is difficult to start. Only in the New York Times . . . .

It starts out well enough. It makes it sound like having an Italian Pope was part of Italian pride. Then, the article begins to rear it’s ugly head.

It starts off by describing the Papacy as a “monarchy.” Even this wouldn’t be bad if it were not for what was to come. The author begins to tell us that we need an Italian Pope so that he can make Catholicism agree with the secular world; oh excuse me, so the Pope will be less “rigid” about sexuality.

The low point comes when this appears about the Pope’s teaching on contraception and the AIDS crisis in Africa:

To these victims John Paul has obstinately refused contraception, for reasons of principle that risk becoming complicity in what could truly be a mass extermination.

There you have it! By upholding the Church’s teaching, the Pope is complicit in mass extermination of African people. Never mind that the Church has reached out more to AIDS victims than any other institution. Also never mind the fact that Uganda, whose program refers to condoms as the last resort, is the country that has succeeded in reducing the incidence of AIDS. Not having condoms leads to mass extermination.

The author could use some brushing-up on his theology. First, the Pope is not a monarch or ruler but a mere guarantor of the Deposit of Faith. Therefore, it is not just JPII, but God himself who has set his laws regarding sexuality. Second, the Church does not have a civic obligation to agree with the secular world on the solutions to our problems. Indeed, when those “solutions” contradict the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we must stand against them. So, finally, it is not because the Pope is Polish that he is upholding the teaching, but because he is Catholic.

Here is a great explanation on the differences between contraception and NFP. Do note the mentality that is required.

Religious Education

  /   Saturday, January 10, 2004   /   Comments(0)

I’m beginning my Saturday morning by discussing another sore spot in the Church. However, there is hope, as the problem of high-school religion texts has been noted by the Archbishop of New Orleans. Of course, I’d be happier about this if I knew the bishops were planning to do something about these defects.

I’m planning to write an article on my web page about a similar topic. A number of faithful young adults will complain that the faith is not being taught. However, we may be at a loss to explain exactly what that means, and this article provides a helpful outline. I know one person who simply used the teaching on contraception as an example. While that is a prime example of the problem, it can lead a baby-boomer priest who doesn’t believe there is a problem to think that it is all about one issue. I even heard one priest talk about this scenario at a daily Mass homily with the response “What sin are you commiting that you want me to condemn?” I wish I had responded “That’s what I need you to tell me, Father!”

Another Courageous Bishop

  /   Friday, January 09, 2004   /   Comments(0)

I hope we see more of this one. Bishop Burke of LaCrosse, WI has decided that there will be no more communion for pro-aborts until they publicly renounce their position. It is way past the time to stop nicely pleading for this, and it is time for bishops to take action. This scandal has gone on way too long. It’s time to stop simply saying that we should be pro-life and start saying that not to be pro-life is gravely sinful, creates an enormous public scandal, and disqualifies you from being in communion with the Church.

I just couldn’t resist posting this article on the use of technology to spread the Gospel. After all, what are our blogs for?
